Strength and Prayer

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. The LORD says, "I will deal with all who oppressed you; I will rescue the lame and gather those who have been scattered. I will give them praise and honour in every land where they were put to shame." [Zephaniah 3:17,19]

Prayer Request

January 8th, 2008

Hi,
My mum lives in Hong Kong and her name is Katherine S. She has suffering from the gallbladder cancer, which is stage IV now. The doctor confirms she will be alive for another 3 - 6 mths only.

Unfortunately, the tube connected to her got swoollen and then she was suffering from high fever. She is very very weak and is in danger now. I keep praying for her and would like to invite more people to pray so as to make the prayer a more powerful one. I really want her to liver longer because she hasn't got much opportunity to know God and came to church in the past.

What I want is to pray for the God to have full control my mum's life, give her faith to walk through all the difficulties in the front. I really want her to leave the hospital ASAP so that we can celebrate the Chinese New Year with her!

I would appreciate if you or your church could help pray for her.

Best regards

Ruby K.

The LORD says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honour them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation." [Psalm 91:14-19]

Dear Ruby,

Our prayers and concern as your spiritual sisters and brothers and as God's people are with you and your mum. Personally, you will be in my constant thoughts as you help your mum with her journey. I understand how difficult and painful all this is. Jesus is walking with you through this, and He is walking with your mum through this too. How would your mum know that Jesus is there for her? It will be because you are there for your mum in a time when she needs comfort, care and compassion the most. Your presence will lift her spirit and give her comfort. Your prayers and thoughts will surround her with God's embrace and everlasting peace. Most of all, your love for her will be the best and most beautiful gift that you could ever give your mom.

Let your mum know that you love her. Let her also know that someone greater and more wonderful loves her too: someone who has the good plans for her. Tell your mum about Jesus and His great love for us. God will have full control your mum's life. As you pray for God to give your mum faith to walk through all the difficulties that lie ahead, God will give her the strength and courage, comfort and hope beyond today.

"I am holding you by your right hand - I, the LORD your God. And I say to you, 'Do not be afraid. I am here to help you'. [Isaiah 41:13]"

"I look up to the mountains - does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, Who made the heavens and the earth! He will not let you stumble and fall; The one who watches you will not sleep. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. [Psalm 121:1-3,8]"

Jesus Christ said: "I am leaving you a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is not the peace the world gives. So do not be troubled or afraid [John 14:27]"

Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am in distress. My sight is blurred because of my tears... I am dying from grief... But I am trusting you, O LORD, Saying, "You are my God!" My future is in your hands [Psalm 31:14-15]

"The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need... He renews my strength... Even when I walk Through the dark valley of death. I will not be afraid, For you are close beside me." [Psalm 23:1,3,4]

May God's hands of protection and love surround and keep you. Trust in God's overflowing mercy and grace. I pray that you will have the most memorable Chinese New Year celebration with your mum!

God's many blessings,

Josephine

Prayer ~ The Great Conversation

Conversation is a two-way event: you speak and you listen. This is how prayer works as well. We tell God our thoughts, our needs, our hopes; and then we listen to God speak to us through his Word and his spirit. The following will help you understand something of what it means to communicate with God:

O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. [Micah 6:8]

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. [Revelation 3:20]

I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly. [Jeremiah 24:7]

For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. [Romans 10:10]

Praying consists of:
  • Talking with God

  • Listening to God

  • Responding to God

  • Thanking God

  • Telling Others

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. [Jeremiah 29:12-13]

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

Take Refuge in God

Praying is talking to God the way you would talk to your friends.
Tell God what makes you happy, excited, proud, angry, sad, ...
Share with God your dreams and fears.
Tell God what you need
God hears you when you talk, and will come to you and show himself to you.
God will answer you when you call on Him.

God is the best listener ever. When you pray, you conversing with God: God is talking to you too!
Hey, God is hanging out with you, just like you hang out with your friends.
Hang ouy with God in your favourite places.
God loves hanging out with you!
Come close to God and talk to God.
God is the best listener ever.
God is the best friend that you can count on!
Tell God about your day: what made you happy, what made you sad?
How about letting God give you a big hug?

But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. [Psalm 94:22]

Places to meet God

Meet God in a garden. God loves gardens.
Smell the flowers, look at the sun shining through the leaves.
Find God among the trees. God created each plant in its beauty and wonder.
Seek God in the mountains, in the wilderness, along the beach,
in the countryside, by a rippling stream,
on your favourite armchair, in still of the night, in the beating of your heart.
When you seek God, you will find God.
This is God's promise to you
And God will make sure of it!

God has a special place he loves to go... just close your eyes and God will bring you there.

God lives in your heart, where he has made his special home.
God loves you like no one else.
Your heart is one of God's most favourite places.
Close your eyes. See God in your heart. What is he saying to you? What is God doing?
How would you like to spend time with God?
See God with you heart. Hear God with your heart.
Your heart knows God because we were God made in God's image
God made you and loves you!

Your heart can hear God's voice
What does God's voice sound like to you?
God speaks in different ways so that you can hear God in a way that is just right for you.
God's voice can be like a breeze whispering through the trees: gentle, quiet and soothing.
Or it can be powerful, strong and loud.

Whenever you see God, that is call faith.
Faith is seeing what God shows your heart.
Faith is hearing what God says to your heart. Faith helps you hear God and see God better and better.
God will always help you see and hear Him better and better.

This is the message of Jesus: God loves you!

Hear what Jesus is saying to his children (yes, you!)
Jesus speaks to the little boy or girl inside you.
If you are able to hear this message as an eager and willing child
Take heart, you might just be entering the kingdom of heaven!

Above all things, seek God first
Seek the kingdom of God and God's righteousness.

When you meet God, how can you know it is really God?
If you see or hear things that make you hate others or yourself, that is not God.
If you see or hear things that make you feel afraid or ashamed, that is not God either.
And if you see or hear things that make you hide from God, that is definitely not God.
There is none like God.
The things God says are true and pure.
God's words help you to love God and other people.
They also help you lift others up when they feel low.
They help you stand up for them when no one else will.
God's words give you strength.
They give you courage
They also give you comfort, joy, and peace.

Another way to be sure it is God is to compare what you hear with how God sounds in the Bible or with what God says to other people who know God.
If you are not sure, just ask!

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. [James 3:17]

God is never far, holding you safe in his hands and showing you the way.

Jesus says, "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. "This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. [Matthew 6:6-8]
